Mush, I am a beginner carver and just finished a bark carving of an old man with a flowing beard but it’s no where as good as yours. Your detail for such small carvings is amazing.I look forward to being able to carve as well as you.

As a new carver, how do I overcome timidity? Socially I’m not shy but put a knife in my hands and I can’t “see” how deep to ever cut.

Welcome to woodcarving. It is not at all unusual for new carvers to be timid about removing wood, afraid they will take away too much wood. As you acquire new skills, are more comfortable with handling a knife, and gain confidence you will be far less timid. Keep in mind that in wood carving there are no mistakes….just design changes. 🙂 Each design change will be a new lesson learned. Just have fun…that’s what it’s all about.
